When I first watched the Queen’s Gambit, and saw Elizabeth Harmon my first thought was 'well, she’s a typical Eight'. The soft-hearted orphan develops and expresses a hardened heart to protect herself. However; she also seemed to have the outsider energy of a Four, the piercing mind of a Five, and a love for winning and achievement that seemed fitting for a Three. So how can we know which type she really was?
Firstly, let’s look at the three centers of intelligence. Within the gut triad; the Eight is the only option. Elizabeth has neither the judgment of a One or the indolent nature of a Nine.
In the heart triad, she seems to have elements of all three of the types. The Fours sense of being an outsider; the cultivation of a unique persona through the clothing she wears. She has a Two's loving and perhaps even codependent tendencies toward her adoptive mother and toward some of the interpersonal relationships in her life, and finally the Three's desire to win and to look good. It's possible from this, she could potentially be a 3 with a balance of the 2 and 4 wings.
From the head triad, Beth could identify with a 7's desire for independence and freedom, with the 5's logical and detached mind, but there seems to be a distinct lack of Enneagram 6 energy, and since Beth's commanding presence captures an Eight's desire for independence, I don't think 6 will be a number I'll be exploring for Beth.
